General English

All courses are 4 weeks in duration. Students can choose from any combination of the following (maximum 6 hours of study per day):

 

Standard General English [ 3 hours per day

]

Our core English course with an integrated approach to all skills. Students are provided with a course book.

08.15 - 11.15

Extension 1 [

1 hour per day]

 

An additional hour focusing on a specific language area (i.e. listening, pronunciation, grammar). Students select from a choice of 2 based on their own needs.

11.30-12.30
or 13.45-14.45

(depending on level)

Extension 2 [ 1 hour per day

]

An additional hour focusing on improving the students’ speaking ability. Higher levels also have the choice of extra ‘fun’ classes such as Drama, Music and Video, Introduction to Business English, etc

Self-Access

[1 hour per day]

An additional hour of self-study. Students can make use of our extensive computer room materials as well as a library, quiet room and listening lab. Special Student “Clubs” are also run during this period such as The Book Club; Sit-Com Club, Debate Club, etc

Please note – the minimum age requirement for all courses is 17.

1 to 1 classes

 

These are private classes with an experienced teacher tailored to your specific needs. Past 1 to 1 courses have included: report writing, pronunciation, literacy, preparation for the Cambridge CPE, BEC exams as well as general and business English. Starting dates are flexible.

Public Holidays – the school is closed on the following dates: 22 March, 2 till 12 April, 27 April, 16 June, 9 August, 24 September and 16 December until January 2011. (Please note that Public Holidays will not be recompensed).

Class Levels

IH Johannesburg offers all levels from Beginner through advanced.* All students are interviewed and tested upon arrival and placed into a class. New students are then monitored by their teacher for the first few days to ensure they are in the appropriate level.

Student Progress

Assessment

Students are continually assessed throughout the course and their teachers are always available to assist and provide guidance. At the end of every 4-week course, students are also tested and will either move to the next level or continue at the same level depending on their evaluation. Students are given a progress report at the end of every 4-week course. Upon completion of their studies, all students are presented with a certificate indicating the final level the student passed.

Self-Access

During their first week at IH, students are given an introduction to the Self-Access Centre. Regular training sessions on basic computer skills are also offered during self-access times free of charge.  Student s receive on-going support with their self-access study by their morning teacher, the librarian, and computer room assistant.
